Fireplace FAQ

  • What type of fireplaces are there?

Generally, fireplaces are divided by the fuel they use to heat your home. There are three primary types:

    • Wood-burning fireplaces that require wood
    • Gas-powered fireplaces that ignite via your natural gas lines or proane
    • Electric fireplaces, where a coil is heated to produce and radiate warmth

Which one is right for you depends a lot on your home and your preferences.

  • Do I need a chimney to install a fireplace?

Wood fireplaces will always need a chimney, but those can also be built into an existing home.

There are a variety of gas fireplaces. Some need a chimney (or other vent) and others are completely ventless.

Electric fireplaces do not require a chimney or vent, but decorative stone can really improve its appearance.

  • Can I operate my fireplace during a power outage?

If you have a gas or wood-burning fireplace, yes.

Unfortunately, unless it’s hooked up to a generator, an electric fireplace will not be operable in a power outage.

  • Why would I replace my fireplace?

Older fireplaces are expensive to maintain and may be incredibly dated. Replacing your fireplace, whether a wood-burning or gas fireplace, can improve efficiency and heat your home better.

  • What is a fireplace insert?

A fireplace insert is a self-contained unit that fits into an existing fireplace. They increase efficiency while reducing emissions. They’re also incredibly cost-effective, especially when delivered by TDi Air Conditioning's experienced fireplace insert installers.

  • What kind of venting do I need?

Every fireplace and home is different, and your venting needs will depend on the type of fireplace you’re interested in.

  • Can I install my TV over a fireplace?

It depends on the type of fireplace you own, your TV, and the distance between the fireplace and the television.
